Fan of 80’s era Mercedes? Thank Bruno Sacco who left the party September 28 at age 90. It’s not often that one person sculpts an era so completely as he did, especially in industrial design with the complications of engineering, marketing, and all of it but he did. Sacco crafted the modern image of Mercedes, handsomely, timelessly, with an unusual modesty. He began at MBZ under Paul Bracq, designer of the famed ‘pagoda’ Mercedes SL, himself creator of the previous era of the company. There are many of Sacco’s greats but mine is the 560 SEC, pictured here. The car today retains an unusual majesty on the road and ushered in so many innovations. Thank you Mr. Sacco and RIP. ❤️

When you’re in New Orleans check out @bevolo in the French Quarter. Gas lanterns are all over the city, their light and charm animate the streets like LED or incandescent cannot. Many of the historical and other lanterns are made by Bevolo. The copper craftsmanship and detail are impressive, as is their workshop. The bench is from a 30’s bowling alley, the space itself a former stable. Great space and gorgeous lanterns. 🔥🔥🔥.

Christopher Wool’s masterful show is a don’t miss if you’re in NYC. If only every artist had the opportunity to contexturalize their work, manner and space in which it is presented. I’ve visited a few times and love how the light and time of day changes the experience, it’s amazing. Finally saw the remarkable Crafting Modernity: Design in Latin America, 1940-1980 at MoMA yesterday. A beautifully curated show with so many examples but this one by Jose Zanine Caldas captured my attention because of the piece's form, and also it's stunning animalistic wood! I love wood and have never seen graining or color like this before. Caldas carved this from a felled tree (assume from the Amazon forest) and the species is unidentified in all the texts I can find. Best I can ID it as is a species of Paubrasilia aka Brazilwood (interestingly from the legume family?!) Maybe it's the cut or the age of the tree but the pattern and color have me entranced!

JOSE ZANINE CALDAS, BRAZIL, 1963-2001
From the 1960s onwards, Jose Zanine Caldas incorporated scraps from deforestation to create what he called “Protest Furniture.” For his iconic masterwork, the “Namoradeira,” or “Tete-a-Tete,” Zanine uses a large section of a felled tree to translate the nineteenth-century French form into the twentieth-century Brazilian design lexicon. Though Zanine carved the “dating chair” from a massive log, the rounded base allows the users to rock back and forth, reinforcing the light, social function of the piece.

Lamborghini Countach? Thank Marcello Gandini, who left us on March 13. Gandini was a force in the automotive world, responsible for over 55 production and concept models across his 85 years, first working at the famed Gruppo Bertone in Turin. What’s amazing is how many of these designs defined and reflected their eras and still resonate - beginning In ’66 at the Geneva Motor Show with the Lamborghini Miura, considered by many as one of the most beautiful cars in the world. In ’67 the Lamborghini Metal dazzled with its spaceship-like silver leather interior. In ’68 the Alfa Romeo Carabo show car introduced scissor doors to the world and electrified our love of the wedge shape. in ’70 the Lancia Stratos HF Zero stunned the world with its sleek geometric shape and impossibly low roofline (the entire front of the car opened for egress). In ‘71 the debut of the Lamborghini LP400 aka Countach, popularized scissor doors from the Carabo on a production vehicle (Gandini denounced Lamborghini’s 2022 relaunch of the Countach, a kind of pastiche of his original design). Other seminal designs would follow like the ’72 BMW 5 series, ’72 Fiat X/19, ’73 Ferrari 208/308 GT4, Lancia Stratos, Renault R5 Turbo and so many more. Grazie Mr. Gandini for your amazing talent!

In platinum cowhide. Flap closure, expandable 'Plic' accordion gusset. Interior pocket system. Solid white bronze hardware. Worn under the arm, long on the shoulder, or as a cross-body bag. A friend stopped by and we shot her bag, showing a nice patina of use. This bag is asymmetrical with a purpose - the weight collects at the base and centers the bag on the shoulder, making it more comfortable.

3500 vintage books, repurposed from a decommissioned library glow in the walls of the room, they also help control the sound levels of the space. As the place is adjacent to Columbia and other schools, 'Accademia' made sense. We love that people are loving it, and hope you might too!
